Lip Fillers FAQs
What are lip fillers?
Lip fillers are injectable dermal fillers, typically made of hyaluronic acid, that add volume, shape, balance, and definition to the lips. They can enhance lip size, improve symmetry, and create a softer, more refreshed look.
What should I do pre treatment?
Avoid dental procedures for 2 weeks before treatment. Refrain from aspirin, ibuprofen, NSAIDs, vitamin E, fish oil, and other blood-thinning supplements or medications for about 3 days before treatment when medically appropriate and approved by your prescribing provider. Minimize sun exposure, avoid alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before treatment, and stay well hydrated. Detailed pre-treatment instructions will be emailed after booking.
How long do lip fillers last?
Is there any downtime?
Downtime with lip fillers is usually minimal. Swelling, tenderness, and bruising are common in the first several days and usually improve as the lips heal. Most patients return to normal activities right away, but it is important to follow post-treatment instructions closely to help minimize swelling and bruising.
Will my lips look natural?
That is always the goal. During your consultation, we will discuss your lip goals, review your anatomy, and set realistic expectations. Our priority is to create a balanced, natural-looking result that complements your features rather than overwhelms them.
Do lip fillers hurt?
The lips are a sensitive area, but most patients find treatment very tolerable. We use a pharmaceutical triple compounded numbing cream to help keep you comfortable. Most people describe the injections as a mild pinch or pressure.
How soon can I get more filler in my lips?
At a minimum, we recommend waiting at least 2 weeks before receiving additional lip filler. This allows swelling to settle and the filler to fully integrate so your results can be assessed more accurately.
What should I do post lip filler treatment?
Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, excessive heat, and excess salt for 24 to 48 hours to help minimize swelling. Avoid rubbing or putting pressure on the lips right after treatment, and avoid dental procedures for 2 weeks after treatment. Detailed post-treatment instructions will be emailed after your appointment.
Can I get a lip flip and lip filler?
Yes. Lip filler and a lip flip can often be done together. Lip filler adds volume and shape, while a lip flip relaxes the upper lip muscle for a slightly more lifted appearance. During your consultation, we can determine whether one or both treatments make sense for your goals.
Why do my lips look uneven when I smile after filler?
Swelling and normal muscle movement can temporarily make the lips look uneven, especially in the first 1 to 2 weeks. This often improves as swelling goes down and the filler settles. If unevenness remains after that point, it can be evaluated and adjusted if needed. Patients with a thin or disappearing top lip will greatly benefit from lip filler and lip flip combinations.
Why do I feel a tingling or numb sensation in my lips?
Mild tingling, tightness, or temporary numbness can happen right after treatment and usually improves within hours to a few days as swelling settles.
What if my lips turn white or pale after filler?
This is not a normal cosmetic side effect and could be a sign of restricted blood flow. Contact your provider immediately if this happens.
Can I fix lip filler migration without dissolving everything?
Sometimes mild migration can be improved without dissolving all of the filler, but more noticeable migration often responds best to partial dissolving and re-treatment. The right approach depends on the severity and where the filler has moved.
Why do my lips feel tight when I talk or smile?
A tight feeling is common in the first few days after treatment and usually improves as swelling decreases and the filler settles into the tissue.
Why do I feel small bumps inside my lips?
This is often related to swelling or filler settling in the early healing phase. It usually softens over 1 to 2 weeks. If anything feels firm, uneven, or concerning beyond that, it should be evaluated. In some cases warm compresses and massaging will help smooth bumps.
Why do my lips look bruised days after treatment?
Bruising does not always show up immediately. It can become more noticeable over the first few days and may last about a week depending on the patient.
